once per second in slave mode.
Why?
can this be disabled while still using the Canon wireless system (as crappy as it is)?

The Canon wireless speedlights operate via infrared light and the slave probably flashes to indicate its presence to the master flash. I don't think you'd be able to disable the slave from flashing and and making it all still work...

as it turns out, it is better to do some research before you start asking questions.

A little bit of gaffer tape on the offending beam emitter solved the problem.
The wireless receiver sensor is separate from the AF beam emitter.

I'd still like to know if there is a more elegant solution to disable the AF beam blinking than the gaffer tape.

I'm looking for a 420EX but any info will help.

They blink to let YOU know they are charged up and ready to fire, since you can't see the "ready" light on the back of the flash)...there may be a menu item on the flash to disable it.

It's just like on the large strobes with the audible alarm to let you know when they are fully charged.

This has been asked on a number of other forums I'm on and the answer always comes back as "No." As mentioned above, it's Canon's way of indicating that the strobe is on, charged and ready to fire. Duct tape it is.
