I know most of you are DSLRers but some of us will always have a place for the high end P&S. The new Canon G11 is hitting the street and there is a Group Pool for the G11, thought some of you might be interested.

I have an order in for a G11 at Henry's, but as of yesterday they have no information on when they'll be in stock. Do you know of any store in Canada that's selling them? I'm kind of hoping that Canon will provide Henry's with some stock to sell at the Digital Imaging Show that's on this weekend.

Vistek shows it on their site as available Oct 23. Please let us know what you think when you get it. As well as image quality I am also interested in its power on to first shot time. For street shooting alla quick rangefinder Henri Cartier-Bresson type of shooting, the G9 is marginal and is the absolute lower end of what would be useable. I know others might say it was too slow, but you can not beat the DOF of the smaller sensor.

I have a G10, which I find quite a bit faster to respond than other digicams I've had. (I've played with the Olympus E-P1, and it's much slower.) The G-series cameras have been getting somewhat faster with each generation. According to dpreview, the G9's "power off to record" time is 1.2 sec, and the G10 is 1.0 sec. The "off to shot taken, with LCD view" is 2.7 sec for the G9 and 1.8 sec for the G10, which is a fairly substantial difference. I expect the G11 to be the same as the G10 or better.

Mind you, the "power off to shot" time for the 5D is <.2 sec...

You can get the speed up with the G9, and can safely assume with the 10 as well, if the camera comes on with manual focusing. I save a settup in one of the customs. Unfortunatly when you switch off the display on the G9 you also switch the camera back to autofocus if it was in manual.
