Sure, why not? If you have the money, go for it! This is ultimately the best standard zoom lens for Canon cropped bodies. I've gone through the 18-55 kit lens, then the 17-85IS, and the 17-55IS. This lens is considered to be of "L lens" quality.

Just a note for newbies that this lens DOES NOT have a date code. The date code represents where and when the particular lens was manufactured.

+1

I'd still have this lens if it fit on the 1D series bodies.
Its worth every penny that it costs.

id say its more than just adequate, especially if ones learning exposure & the effects of each parameter. Its really difficult to teach about depth of field with f/4-5.6 lenses, its not obvious enough.

You've obviously never done any macro work.

It's my bread and butter lens. I'm glad I bit the bullet and took the upgrade from 17-85IS and I never miss the extra range of the former a bit.

Many of the samples have dust issue though (like mine)... I could have gotten one free cleaning from Canon Canada but as I've said before, it's my bread and butter lens and I couldn't even do without it for a week
