Hi Guys,

You'll need the MC-DC2 remote cord which is about $40. at Henry's. Likewise, you can get spare batteries pretty much anywhere for $90. Henry's, Vistek, AdenCamera, Downtown Camera....

I think you need the cord to do long exposures.
I don't think you can hold the shutter open with the wireless remote.

I had the D70s, the IR remote worked fine on the bulb mode.

And we are back!!...:)Someone explain please what that means!!? :) In layman terms does that mean it would work for long exposures? :)

Bulb essentially means that the shutter stays open for as long as the shutter button remains pressed. On cable releases this is a very nice features because most of them allow you to depress the shutter and then lock it on the remote so you can take your hand away and leave it there for a long time then come back and unlock it so it closes the shutter again. Having to stay with your finger on the shutter button of the body like this for an extended period of time would undoubtedly not only move the camera (ruining your photo) but also be really boring.

Regarding what jackctk said I'm surprised since I have never thought of using an IR remote for bulb mode and as far as I know this capability doesn't even exist on IR remotes... Though I can think of a few odd scenarios it might be useful, but if anything comes between you and the camera for even a second and interrupts the IR signal I assume it will close the shutter...

In conclusion, get a cable release and as long as you have a tripod you're set for long exposure (and bulb) for night shooting.

Unfortunately I can't confirm whether the MC-DC2 is the right remote for the D90 since I shoot canon but I'm sure Carlton knows what he's talking about.

Henry's lists the MC-DC2 as the remote for the D90
and the Nikon site lists it as a D90 accessory .

I just looked it up at Vistek and the MC-DC2 is $33. compared to $40 at Henrys. Henry's will price match though so keep that in mind.

Actually with the remote you can do the shutter open for ever...
If its set on a B shutter..Bulb...
where it acts first click as open and second click as close ....
Cheers

I''ve got one of these for my D90. Plus it works for most Nikons AFAIK.
My only grip with it is that in very very bright sun, the IR beam gets washed out and the camera does pick up the signal.

Otherwise it works very well.

Thanks guys but i am still confused..should i get the ml-l3 or the mc dc2? Are you saying i can do the long exposures (star trails in this case) using the ml-l3. My manual mentions the ml l3 but does not say how long an exposure i can do with it.

Hey Folks,

YES... you can use the remote to operate the camera in bulb mode. You press once for the shutter to open, then again to close the shutter. Its that simple. Done.
