Time: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Meet: Meet in front of the main entrance at 9:45 AM (we will enter at 10)

As you may be aware 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. The Country Heritage Park located outside Milton just off the 401 is hosting a major US Civil War reenactment the weekend of August 20th to 21st.

The event will include a full day of reenactment activities culminating in the traditional mock battle. These activities include;
    Re-enactment of a major battle
    Authentic military camps
    Period music
    Medical demonstrations
    Artillery and cavalry demonstrations

The reenactment is presented by the American Civil War Historical Re-enacting Society (ACWHRS). The following description is from their website.
Quote:
Each summer the ACWHRS hosts a Civil War living history event at the Country Heritage Park in Milton Ontario, near highway 401 and highway 25. This event is the largest military reenactment in Canada, and we host visiting units from Canada and the United States.

In addition to the reenactment the Country Heritage Park exhibits will be open including collections of antique farming equipment and heritage buildings.

The Country Heritage Park is located at: 8560 Tremaine Road, Milton, Ontario, L9T 2Y3

Directions:
Toronto/Mississauga via the 401
Take the 401 west to Highway 25 exit; go north to the 4th traffic light; turn left onto Side Road 5/Regional Road 9; after 3 km turn left onto Tremaine Road (hidden intersection); go over the 401 bridge and the Park is immediately on the right.

Toronto/Mississauga via the QEW
Take the QEW west to the Highway 25 exit; go north to Hwy 5; turn left and travel about 1.5 km to Tremaine Road (three way intersection); turn right and travel about 15 km (past Derry Road and Steeles Avenue). The Park is on the left, below the 401.

As always if you can offer a ride let people know by posting below, and if you need a ride post your need and watch for those who can offer.

Due to the long day we will discuss if there is any desire to have a meal afterwards during the event.

Yeah I know its way early to post for August, but when it comes to summer weekends I need to plan well in advance.

With the event only three weeks and a bit away I thought it might be good to bump it back onto the radar for people.

Unfortunately, I am busy on the Saturday, but might go on the Sunday instead. I have gone to this before, and I enjoyed it. Country Heritage Park is a nice location to shoot as well. If I remember correctly, they had 2 encampments set up (North and South), and they did a cavalry and an artillery demonstration on the battlefield prior to the actual battle.

Updated information. Looks like the reenactment will be of the First Battle of Bull Run, which if you are familiar with the history did not go so well for the Union.

You can see photos from the 2009 event here; http://www.acwhrs.com/milton.htm

Thanks to everyone who came out. A smaller event then expected but not crowded either. Good experience to know what to expect at reenactments.

Hope you all got some awesome stuff.

I went today, and the encampment was definitely smaller than I remember from the last time I was there (2 or 3 years ago). The rain did hold off though for the battle - the downpour came in between the demonstrations and the battle itself.

Yeah, we discussed this as well but apparently venues got much smaller due to lack of US people coming over. Apparently the mandatory gun registration at border is a deal breaker for many, which is quite unfortunate. If I get a chance I'll try to visit some US ones later.

Thanks Daryl for organizing. Interesting event for sure and it was a good opportunity to learn about positioning and timing.
Cannon firing was definitely the hardest.. positioning was the second hardest.. :)

Some of the shots I like..

Love the Calvary rider ndutzie! And the canon shots look great Madelica.

I am considering going to a War of 1812 reenactment on September 10th down by Lake Erie at Backus Pioneer Village. Last time I went it was pretty good with two battles and lots of camp opportunities.

Is there any interest in a trip down there as an ad hoc? It takes about 2.5 hours to drive there from Toronto.

DG

When I googled the Backus reenactment, I found dates of Sept 10 &11, which is the weekend. I would be interested, but the Saturday would be better for me.

Well, I wasn't able to make it on the Saturday, but had a good time on Sunday where the place was practically empty! Great to bump into Janet too and a few other's from the club.

Still have way too many shots to go through, but some highlights are as follows:

I'm in. My only consolation for missing this one was knowing Bachus was mounting one so soon after.

I know this is very late - but as much for inspiration for the next one in Bachus. I was in Mexico for a week and I'm still catching up. Oddly, I didn't get any shots of the actual battle I liked. Backgrounds were problematic.

But here are samplers. The rest are here: http://www.pbase.com/reimar/bull_run
